Backwash is another opportunity in the Northern Nevada area for homebrewers to share their creations with the general public. Backwash has supported various local charities and gives the brewer’s choice winner the opportunity to brew their winning beer on a commercial system. Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery recently brewed 2017’s winner and will be having a release party this Wednesday at their Wonder St location. We will definitely be their supporting our friend’s, Joe Reyna, Vanilla IPA. It was delicious at Backwash last year and I have no doubt it will be great on Wednesday.

You may remember the Sons of Fermentation Homebrew Spectacular from earlier this month. It was a great success, raising a ton of money for Cystic Fibrosis, and my first competition pouring my own beer. I joined my friend, Kristina, who happens to be Joe’s wife, as R&R Brewing. I brought my Vanilla Wafer Blonde and Kristina brought her Raspberry Fig Cream Ale. Our beers were received very well and it was great fun. The Vanilla Wafer Blonde took 3rd in People’s Choice and Kristina’s Raspberry Fig Cream Ale took 2nd in Judge’s Choice, but was super close to taking 1st. Judges were local brewery and craft beer owners. She certainly impressed them. It was really good, so I wasn’t surprised. Brandon took 2nd in People’s Choice and 1st in Brewer’s Choice with his Maple Breakfast Stout properly named: Breakfast with Ollie, it was Oliver’s birthday after all.
Brandon has been participating in Backwash for the last 3 years. His first year he won Brewer’s choice and was able to brew his IPA on Silver Peak’s system. In Brandon’s second year he swept People’s choice with his latest IPA. If you haven’t seen a trend yet, Brandon brews really good IPAs! Brandon is planning to skip brewing for Backwash this year, so I’m planning to jump in on the fun. Maybe I’ll make him pour for me, since I’ve always been roped into it! Who am I kidding, pouring at these events is a lot fun, maybe even better then trying to taste almost 100 beers!
Backwash has not updated their website for brewer entries yet, but did announce the date for 2018, June 2! That’s only 9 weeks away, and scheduling brew times certainly takes time. I’m planning on the following line up for my debut at Backwash.
- West Coast Galaxy Nelson IPA
- Blueberry Mojito Gose
- White Chocolate Pale Stout
These will definitely expand my brewing knowledge as I start brewing them in the coming weeks. A Pale Stout isn’t even a traditional category and there are zero guidelines on how to build it out. I’m thinking a sweet stout profile and forget the color guideline altogether. We will see.
I’ll let you know when I see entries for Backwash starting and if you are a local homebrewer, I highly recommend enter a few of your beers. It is a rare and fun opportunity to share your craft with the public and of course raises money for a great local cause.
Make sure to come out to Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery this Wednesday, March 28th to try Joe’s Vanilla IPA. We will be there, so make sure to come say hi and enjoy a pint, you will not be disappointed!
